Thank you from Lee, and Rethink Mental Illness.

The Staffordshire Additional Housing Management Service is run by Rethink Mental illness to support people who struggle to access or sustain a home because of their mental health issues. Our tenant Lee, shares his experience with the service:

“My life was going really well. I was in a steady relationship. I was earning good money and I was happy. Then my relationship ended, I started drinking and things went on a downward spiral. Life was hard. My mental health and physical health started to deteriorate, and I was diagnosed with depression. Things just got worse and worse.”

“When I ended up homeless and living in a tent with the rain pouring in, I knew I had hit rock bottom. I had nothing.”

“I am sure I would be dead by now if I hadn’t been referred to the tenancy support service. Moving into my flat has made things a lot better. No one bothers me, and I feel much safer. I enjoy the simple things like being able to have a shower in privacy, and I don’t have to worry about the rain anymore!”

“Carla, my support worker is great – she’s helped me with loads of things like sorting out my tenancy, getting my health checked and looking after my mental health. I still have good days and bad days, but I feel a lot more confident.”

“When I moved in, I had nothing, so I was lucky to be given a starter pack. It had everything I needed – pots, pans, everything for the kitchen, even my bedding. Money is very tight, so it makes a big difference not having to worry about things like that. Being able to cook my own meals and eat off a plate with a knife and fork means a lot to me. And it was great to be able to offer Carla a cup of tea when she came around.”

“The thing I’m most looking forward to is seeing my son at Christmas, this will make me feel very happy.”

The Staffordshire Additional Housing Management Service provides a real lifeline to people who are struggling with serious mental health issues. We have 57 properties and everyone has their own space with most of our tenants moving on quickly to longer term accommodation; though some end up staying with us for a couple of years or even longer. Everyone staying in our properties has a mental health condition, such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, OCD or bipolar disorder.

We help tenants like Lee to get to grips with the practical things such as finance, setting up their utilities or registering with their GP. And we support people to improve their mental health so they can live independent and fulfilling lives. Our starter packs go the extra mile and give tenants like Lee the essentials they need to settle in.
